Choose the Surfaces That Deserve Budget

Last reviewed:

“Be visible in AI” is not a scope. It is a slogan wearing a budget request. The scoping decision is which surfaces you intend to win, in which markets, for which parts of the buyer journey — and the honest version of that decision starts from how each surface actually works.

The surface map

Each major surface has a grounding index, a control point, and an audience. Those three properties decide whether it belongs in your scope.

  • Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini ground on Google’s index and ranking systems. The control points are ordinary: crawlability, indexing, structured data, content quality. No special file, no separate submission — Google says so directly.
  • ChatGPT search discovers content through Bing and fetches pages live. The control points are Bing indexability plus OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot — which is independent of GPTBot (training) and ChatGPT-User (user-triggered fetches). A site can decline training and still be fully visible in search. The mechanics are covered in ChatGPT Search vs GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot.
  • Microsoft Copilot grounds on Bing. It is the one surface with first-party citation reporting: the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows which URLs get cited across Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries.
  • Perplexity runs its own index and cites aggressively. It rewards the same things the others do — clean structure, fresh content, clear answers — but on its own crawl schedule.
  • Marketplace assistants are a separate discipline. Amazon folded Rufus into Alexa for Shopping in May 2026, unifying shopping context across its apps, sites, and Echo devices. If marketplaces carry meaningful revenue, listing content and review themes are AI SEO inputs you do not control from your own domain.
  • Agentic commerce is the transactional frontier: OpenAI and Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol and Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (announced January 2026 with Shopify, Target, Walmart, and 20+ endorsers) standardize how agents buy — physical goods, digital goods, and subscriptions. This is a commerce-platform decision with margin and data implications, not a default AI SEO deliverable.

The structural shortcut

One index grounds two surfaces. Bing feeds both Copilot and ChatGPT search, so Bing index hygiene — verification, sitemaps, IndexNow, crawl-error cleanup — pays twice. For most enterprises this is the highest-leverage single line in the scope, and years of Google-only habit mean it is usually in worse shape than anyone assumes.

Decision rules

  • Scope by buyer, not by hype. Put budget where your buyers research. B2B evaluation happens heavily on Copilot and ChatGPT; consumer product discovery increasingly starts inside marketplaces; brand and category questions hit Google’s AI features at Google’s scale.
  • Name the surface × market grid explicitly. A scope that says “ChatGPT and Copilot in our top five markets, Google AI features everywhere we rank, marketplaces for the accessory line, agentic checkout deferred pending a margin review” can be resourced and measured. A scope that says “AI visibility” cannot.
  • Treat agentic commerce as a pilot decision, not table stakes. The protocols are real and the endorsements are heavyweight, but participation surrenders parts of checkout, onboarding, and customer data. Decide transaction routing per product line — where discovery may happen in-surface but the purchase belongs on owned property.
  • Write down what you are not doing. Deliberately unscoped surfaces are the cheapest line in the program: they cost one sentence now and prevent a quarter of drift later.

Common scenarios

  • Enterprise ecommerce, multi-market: Google AI features + Bing/Copilot stack + marketplace assistants; agentic-commerce pilot in one market with explicit conversion guardrails; readiness verified with the multi-surface checklist.
  • B2B software: Copilot and ChatGPT first (that is where evaluation happens), documentation treated as a first-class visibility asset, marketplaces out of scope.
  • Publisher or content brand: Google AI features and Perplexity dominate the exposure; the scoping question is less “which surface” than how much zero-click erosion the business model tolerates — see the measurement guide.
